There’s no place quite like Myrtle Beach when it comes to year-round golfing, and at the heart of the Grand Strand lies Pine Lakes Country Club. Affectionately known as ‘The Granddaddy,’ it was Myrtle Beach’s first golf course. Opened in 1927, the club was fashioned by Robert White, a Scot and the first president of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America. Ever since its opening, we’ve seen duffers from around the world enjoy the beauty, challenge, and charm that Pine Lakes brings. Regardless of the season, there is an appeal to playing at Pine Lakes that never fades.
The Enduring Charming Appeal of Pine Lakes
Pine Lakes is as much a feast for the eyes as it is a challenge for your golfing skills. True to the spirit of White’s design, the course retains a classic design interspersed with modern renovations to ensure golfers have a memorable experience. The fairways are generous, the greens are true and fast, and gentle undulations of the terrain make for an exciting and varied game.
However, the golf course isn’t the only appeal here. The Pine Lakes clubhouse, a southern mansion style structure, is as iconic as the course itself. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it brings a touch of charm, dignity, and timeless grace to the whole Pine Lakes experience.
Spring: The Renewal Season
Spring at Pine Lakes is an experience unparalleled. As winter departs, fairways become greener, flowers bloom, and the course mirrors the vibrant spirit of the season. Temperatures range between a comfortable 60-80 degrees, making it perfect for golf.
While the charm of Pine Lakes is enticing, novice golfers should note that spring season also brings fast and firm conditions with tricky winds that might add an extra degree of difficulty to the otherwise straightforward Pine Lakes layout.
Summer: Sun, Sea and Golf
Summer, with its warm temperatures and longer days, sees the course in full swing. The Bermudagrass greens thrive, and golfers can enjoy extended playtime. Of course, hydration is crucial, especially when playing under the bright Myrtle Beach summer sun. Remember to keep cool – both in the game and literally.
Autumn: Picture-Perfect Golfing Weather
Autumn, for many golfers, is the best time to play at Pine Lakes. With leaves beginning to turn and temperatures hovering in a pleasant 60-80 degree range, conditions are near perfect for a leisurely game of golf. The greens roll consistently, and the wind provides a gentle challenge to keep things interesting.
Winter: Cool and Quiet Golf
Winter in Myrtle Beach is mild compared to other parts of the country. This is the ‘secret season’ of Pine Lakes with temperatures often still comfortable enough for a round of golf. The course is quieter during winter, allowing for a peaceful day out. And though the greens might be a bit slower due to colder temperatures, the course remains in excellent condition.
From the unique challenges the different seasons bring to the unwavering beauty Pine Lakes displays throughout the year, it truly is a golfer’s paradise anytime you choose to visit. Whether you are a seasoned golfer or a recreational player, every trip here will guarantee delightful melodies of laughter, frustration, joy, and exhilaration resonating under the expansive Myrtle Beach sky. So, no matter when you decide to visit Myrtle Beach, make sure to pay Pine Lakes a visit – because golf never goes out of season here!
I finally got a chance to tee off at Pine Lakes this summer and man, was it an experience. The greens were fantastic – fast and true, just as the blog says. The southern mansion-style clubhouse was so classy too. Just wondering, anyone knows if they serve a good old Arnold Palmer there? Cheers!
This blogpost really does Pine Lakes justice. Played there last spring and the vibe was fantastic! Wasn’t used to the quick conditions and tricky winds, got a bit of a challenge. But truly, it’s a beautiful spot for playing golf… notwithstanding the added strokes to my scorecard, of course! 😅 Any beginners out there thinking of trying Pine Lakes in spring, just be ready to face the winds. Happy golfing!
